In this article:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump asked a staffer to delete camera footage at his Florida estate in an effort to obstruct the federal investigation into his possession of classified documents, according to an updated indictment unsealed Thursday that adds new charges against the former president and names an additional defendant.
The indictment includes new counts of obstruction and willful retention of national defense information, compounding Trump's legal jeopardy even as he braces for a possible additional indictment in Washington over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The additional counts underscore the extent of the yearlong investigation into Trump that first produced charges last month in the form of a 38-count indictment against Trump and his valet, Walt Nauta.
A Trump spokesperson dismissed the new charges as “nothing more than a continued desperate and flailing attempt” by the Biden administration “to harass President Trump and those around him” and to influence the 2024 presidential race.
The classified records were taken by Trump to Mar-a-Lago after he left the White House in January 2021.

The superseding indictment charges Trump with an additional count of willfully retaining national defense information relating to the former president discussing U.S. military plans to attack another country during an interview in July 2021 at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club. The interview was for a memoir being written by his onetime chief of staff, Mark Meadows, who in his subsequent book named the country as Iran.
According to the indictment, Trump returned that document, which was marked as top secret and not approved to show to foreign nationals, to the federal government on Jan. 17. 2022.
It marks a notable shift in the prosecution’s approach to Trump’s case, charging him for retaining a document it alleges the former president knew was highly sensitive after he left office — and not just for failing to return it to the government when asked.
Both Trump and Nauta have pleaded not guilty.

One wonders if this new criminal defendant, DeOliveira, has flipped or what.
It seems like all the dominoes are beginning to topple.

All eyes were on the DC Courthouse today as Trump’s attorneys showed up to futilely plead that he not be indicted. They day ended with no action there. Stay tuned for tomorrow or next week.
But Smith dropped another surprising bomb in the Mar-a-Lago documents case adding another conspirator, and three more charges against Trump. Two for obstruction of justice, and another for willful retention of national defense documents. You can read the superseding indictment HERE.

The most interesting new charge involves new codefendant, Carlos De Oliveira. De Oliveira helped Nauta move the boxes around between the storage room and Trump’s residence. He is charged with that now, and for false statements because he told the FBI he never touched any boxes or saw anything.
More interesting, he is charged with conspiring with Trump and Nauta to delete videos showing them moving the boxes. Check out the timeline beginning on p. 27 of the new indictment.
On June 22, 2022 the grand jury subpoenaed the video from surveillance cameras around the room where the documents were stored. The very next day Trump calls De Oliveira and they speak for nearly half an hour. The day after that Nauta, after talking to Trump by phone, changes his travel plans. Instead of accompanying Trump to Illinois, he will return to Mar-a-Lago. He tells people the reason for the change is . . . “a secret.”
Meanwhile, this is still June 24th, De Oliveira texts the IT guy asking for how long video from the cameras is stored. The IT guy isn’t sure but says he thinks it is 45 days. Nauta confirms, by text, with De Oliveira that De Oliveira will be in Mar-a-Lago.
On June 27th, just five days after the subpoena, Nauta and De Oliveira meet with the IT guy. De Oliveira tells the IT guy that “the boss” wants the server containing the video records deleted. When the IT guy pushed back, saying he would need approval from his security supervisor, De Oliveira again stated that “the boss” wanted the server deleted, and asked, “what are we going to do.”
Secretive talks ensued between Trump, Nauta and De Oliveira. In the end the server was not deleted and the FBI got the tapes, but the conspirators tried, and that’s what matters.
Accordingly Trump, Nauta and De Oliveira are now charged with two counts under 18 U.S.C. § 1512 for corruptly attempting to persuade another person to destroy records sought in the investigation.
Put simply Trump engaged in a conspiracy with two of his employees to destroy evidence after that evidence was demanded by a grand jury. Another log on the corruption bonfire.
